Today, hybrid cloud is increasingly the norm, and enterprises are challenged with ways to have visibility, manage and make use of all this data – both on-premises and in the cloud. While much attention has been given to primary data affecting mission-critical workloads, data for secondary workloads – backup, test/dev, disaster recovery, and archiving to name a few – have become siloed the same way application data has, leading to multiple point solutions to manage an increasing amount of data. This white paper looks at the evolution of these challenges and offers practical advice on ways to store, manage and move secondary data in hybrid cloud architectures while extracting the hidden value it can provide. Around-the-clock global operations, data growth, and server virtualization all together can complicate protection and recovery strategies. They affect when and how often you can perform backups, increase the time required to back up, and ultimately affect your ability to successfully restore. These challenges can force lower standards for recovery objectives, such as reducing the frequency of backup jobs or protecting fewer applications, both of which can introduce risk. High-speed snapshot technologies and application integration can go a long way toward meeting these needs, and they have quickly become essential elements of a complete protection strategy. But snapshot copies have often been managed separately from traditional backup processes. Features like cataloging for search and retrieval as well as tape creation usually require separate management and do not fully leverage snapshot capabilities. To eliminate complexity and accelerate protection and recovery, you need a solution

ENDPOINT DATA. It’s often one of the most forgotten aspects of an enterprise data protection strategy. Yet, content on laptops, desktops and mobile devices is among a company’s most valuable data even while it’s potentially at the greatest risk. According to IDC there will be some 1.3 billion mobile workers by 2015. However, only half of enterprises today are using some type of endpoint backup. That means that the volume of endpoint data that is in jeopardy is nothing short of significant. Download to read the buyer's checklist on endpoint data protection!

How do you maintain the security and confidentiality of your organization’s data in a world in which your employees, contractors and partners are now working, file sharing and collaborating on a growing number of mobile devices? Makes you long for the day when data could be kept behind firewalls and employees were, more or less, working on standardized equipment. Now, people literally work on the edge, using various devices and sending often unprotected data to the cloud. This dramatic shift to this diversified way of working has made secure backup, recovery and sharing of data an exponentially more difficult problem to solve. The best approach is to start with a complete solution that can intelligently protect, manage and access data and information across users, heterogeneous devices and infrastructure from a single console - one that can efficiently manage your data for today's mobile environment and that applies rigorous security standards to this function.

Today, nearly every datacenter has become heavily virtualized. In fact, according to Gartner as many as 75% of X86 server workloads are already virtualized in the enterprise datacenter. Yet even with the growth rate of virtual machines outpacing the rate of physical servers, industry wide, most virtual environments continue to be protected by backup systems designed for physical servers, not the virtual infrastructure they are used on. Even still, data protection products that are virtualization-focused may deliver additional support for virtual processes, but there are pitfalls in selecting the right approach. This paper will discuss five common costs that can remain hidden until after a virtualization backup system has been fully deployed.

T raditional backup systems fail to meet the needs of modern organizations by focusing on backup, not recovery. They treat databases as generic files to be copied, rather than as transactional workloads with specific data integrity, consistency, performance, and availability requirements. Additionally, highly regulated industries, such as financial services, are subject to ever?increasing regulatory mandates that require stringent protection against data breaches, data loss, malware, ransomware, and other risks. These risks require fiduciary?class data recovery to eliminate data loss exposure and ensure data integrity and compliance. This book explains modern database protection and recovery challenges (Chapter 1), the important aspects of a database protection and recovery solution (Chapter 2), Oracle’s database protection and recovery solutions (Chapter 3), and key reasons to choose Oracle for your database protection and recovery needs (Chapter 4).

The purpose of IT backup and recovery systems is to avoid data loss and recover quickly, thereby minimizing downtime costs. Traditional storage-centric data protection architectures such as Purpose Built Backup Appliances (PBBAs), and the conventional backup and restore processing supporting them, are prone to failure on recovery. This is because the processes, both automated and manual, are too numerous, too complex, and too difficult to test adequately. In turn this leads to unacceptable levels of failure for today’s mission critical applications, and a poor foundation for digital transformation initiatives. Governments are taking notice. Heightened regulatory compliance requirements have implications for data recovery processes and are an unwelcome but timely catalyst for companies to get their recovery houses in order. Onerous malware, such as ransomware and other cyber attacks increase the imperative for organizations to have highly granular recovery mechanisms in place that allow

Old Dutch Foods, known for its broad selection of snack foods in the midwest United States and Canada, was struggling to get the right products to the right places at the right time. Its data center included outdated physical servers, and batch processing meant that inventory would not be updated until the end of the day as opposed to real time. In addition, recovering from power outages and disk failures could frequently take up to two weeks. To modernize its data center, Old Dutch Foods invested in EMC Converged Infrastructure. The fast and easy deployment of two VCE VBlock® systems running JD Edwards, MS Exchange, mobile device apps, and operation of a backup site with replicated applications and data. This enhanced the IT department's responsiveness to the business, allowed them to shift to real-time inventory, and reduced CapEx and OpEx costs. Operations were simplified by reducing person-hours needed for infrastructure maintenance by 75 percent.
