Government agencies often look to promote new technology for cost-savings and efficiency, but it does not stop there. The second and third-tier effects of technology can be long lasting for citizens, businesses, and economies. When public institutions adopt the cloud, they experience an internal transformation. Inside an organization, cloud usage drives greater accessibility of data and information sharing, increases worker productivity, and improves resource allocation. The external benefit of the cloud is recognized through a government’s ability to put reclaimed time and resources toward serving citizens. This includes provisioning public services, such as occupational-skills training, quicker and more effective service delivery, a pathway to a more productive workforce, and ultimately, a boost to local development. This whitepaper examines the enterprise-level benefits of the cloud, as well as the residual impact on economic development. The U.S. Economic Development Administration

There’s strong evidence organizations are challenged by the opportunities presented by external information sources such as social media, government trend data, and sensor data from the Internet of Things (IoT). No longer content to use internal databases alone, they see big data resources augmented with external information resources as what they need in order to bring about meaningful change. According to a September 2015 global survey of 251 respondents conducted by Harvard Business Review Analytic Services, 78 percent of organizations agree or strongly agree that within two years the use of externally generated big data will be “transformational.” But there’s work to be done, since only 21 percent of respondents strongly agree that external data has already had a transformational effect on their firms.

The scalability of its EP-LAN lets MMC Corp seize new opportunities without adding infrastructure. For example, Scales and Trusler are looking at virtual desktops or virtual desktop image [VDI] files for some offices and even job sites. “We’ll probably have to scale some bandwidth internally for that,” Trusler notes, “but if we do the VDI internally or we do it with an external third party, it doesn’t really matter… because we can get them on that EP-LAN network and we can get the bandwidth that we need… quickly.” EP-LAN is scalable. In most cases, adding additional services at a specific customer location can easily be turned up by Spectrum Enterprise remotely. Choosing a fiber EP-LAN over MPLS not only met the challenge to connect MMC Corp locations: it created an IT platform that continues to scale to support rapid expansion and innovation.

All companies, small and large, grapple with infrastructure growth and IT modernization. For many companies, datacenter infrastructure has become an essential part of a hybrid cloud environment that allows users to consume internal and external resources seamlessly. This, in turn, is helping modernize today's datacenters and drive new levels of agility, productivity, and scale. A common attribute of modern datacenter infrastructure is solutions that provide all compute and data services as a single system that can be managed holistically at a rack scale. IDC refers to such solutions as converged infrastructure.

This paper covers some of the critical security gaps today’s mobile-cloud enterprises must address: • Unsecured devices. Unsecured devices allow users to easily access business data from mobile apps or cloud services simply by entering their credentials into an app or browser on the device. Once on the device, data can be easily compromised or shared with unauthorized, external sources. • Unmanaged apps. These typically include business apps, such as Office 365 productivity apps, that the user has downloaded from a personal app store instead of the enterprise app store. As a result, these apps are not under IT control but can still be used to access business content once the user enters his or her credentials. • Unsanctioned cloud services. Most enterprise cloud services have associated ecosystems of apps and services that integrate using APIs. While the enterprise cloud service might be sanctioned, apps and services from its ecosystem might not be.

The financial services industry is increasingly at a crossroads. Faced with mounting pressure from external forces, such a competition from FinTech companies and a more demanding client base, banks and financial services firms are working to become more customer-centric in their approach to business. However, the need to keep sensitive customer and business information secure and ensure compliance with government regulations can stymie those efforts. The proprietary hardware so prevalent in traditional networks can’t provide what financial institutions need; a growing number, therefore, are turning to software-defined networking (SDN).

Today’s employees demand greater flexibility, productivity, and mobility. And while cloud and BYOD policies have answered that call, they’ve also added unforeseen complexities the way IT manages data security and compliance. How can you balance productivity and risk in SaaS environments? “A Guide to Achieving SaaS Security and Compliance” deconstructs the idea that cloud security and user productivity are mutually exclusive. This whitepaper includes guidance on how to: Select SaaS providers that follow the very same external standards (e.g., PCI DSS) as your organization. Apply the same in-house security, governance, and compliance principles to cloud services. Leverage tools and processes to gain visibility, control access, and protect data in your SaaS environment.

With the growing demand of business for tighter communication and collaboration with external parties such as business partners and customers, IT has to provide the technical foundation for such integration. Web Access Management and Identity Federation are key technologies for that evolution. They enable organizations to manage access both from and to external systems, including cloud services, in a consistent way. Organizations have to move forward towards strategic approaches to enabling that integration, in support of the Extended and Connected Enterprise.

After several years of relentless hardware and software innovation, the mainframe is at an inflection point. It’s quickly moving from being a supporting platform of transaction revenue to becoming a source of revenue growth and innovation. Organizations are evolving toward what IDC calls the “connected mainframe.” This evolution to the platform is also enabling the mainframe to play a central role in organizations’ digital transformation (DX) journey. Key steps in achieving the connected mainframe require that organizations modernize and integrate the platform with their internal and external environments. IDC finds that these modernization and integration initiatives lead to new business innovations, which in turn are driving revenue growth. Early adopters of a connected mainframe strategy have achieved more than 300% return on investment (ROI). Over 50% of the benefit value came from business productivity gains, realized from higher transaction volumes, new services, and/or business
