The very best anti-spam solutions today deliver 95% effectiveness. Unfortunately, that's not good enough. A border-line attack that gets through a 5% gap in defenses could cost your organization millions of dollars in terms of business lost, exposure to privacy threats, and brand loyalty. This white paper discusses the ongoing evolution of spam threats and the technology needed to close that remaining 5% gap in defenses. To defeat spam, enterprises need a holistic approach rather than an uncoordinated collection of features and filters. By systematically tying features together through real-time machine learning and analysis, enterprises can increase the effectiveness of their spam defenses to nearly 100%.

Advanced persistent threats (APTs) are stealthier and more spiteful than ever. Sophisticated techniques are used to quietly breach organizations and deploy customized malware, which potentially remains undetected for months. Such attacks are caused by cybercriminals who target individual users with highly evasive tools. Legacy security approaches are bypassed to steal sensitive data from credit card details to intellectual property or government secrets. Traditional cybersecurity solutions, such as email spam filters, anti-virus software or firewalls are ineffective against advanced persistent threats. APTs can bypass such solutions and gain hold within a network to make organizations vulnerable to data breaches.

Cyren examined 11.7 million inbound emails at companies using various email security solutions to measure any possible “security gaps” in their protection, and identify any potential risks for the companies. Solutions tested ranged from hosted email services with included security filtering to on-premises email security gateways. The study was conducted during September and October 2017, and revealed that, on average, 10.5% of email delivered to users after being scanned by their current email security solution was spam, phishing, or malware email. The report also summarizes results for three separate cases, which illustrate how penetration rates can vary across different companies.

Today’s businesses rely heavily on email to communicate with clients, partners, and colleagues. But research suggests that organizations are lacking when it comes to protecting themselves against the increasing number of customized and complex attacks. When polled by Mimecast, 83% of IT security managers said they see email as a primary source of attack, yet 65% claim they aren’t fully equipped to resolve the risks associated with email threats. Respondents’ perceptions of primary security threats also appeared to change based on having experienced a successful breach. However, viruses, malware, spam, and insider threats remain the top concerns for both groups, both with and without breach experience.
