In a context of mass data fragmentation on-premises and in the cloud, organizations now struggle with the compounded complexities brought about by modern workloads such as containers, NoSQL/NewSQL databases, and SaaS applications. These new workloads are turning traditional backup and recovery approaches on their head—in particular, in Microsoft Office 365 deployments for which new backup, recovery, and data management schemas must be deployed.

Downtime & Data Loss are Business Problems, not IT Issues Data protection and backup are often among the least appreciated aspects of IT, both in terms of budget and the perception of creating “business value” for the broader organization. Arguably, data protection and backup aren’t always respected even when compared to other facets of IT — until something fails, breaks, is overwritten, or corrupted accidentally or on purpose.

Backup and recovery needs a radical rethink. When today’s incumbent solutions were designed over a decade ago, IT environments were exploding, heterogeneity was increasing, and backup was the protection of last resort. The goal was to provide a low cost insurance policy for data, and to support this increasingly complex multi-tier, heterogeneous environment. The answer was to patch together backup and recovery solutions under a common vendor management framework and to minimize costs by moving data across the infrastructure or media.

Traditionally, the best practice for mission-critical Oracle Database backup and recovery was to use storage-led, purpose-built backup appliances (PBBAs) such as Data Domain, integrated with RMAN, Oracle’s automated backup and recovery utility. This disk-based backup approach solved two problems: 1) It enabled faster recovery (from disk versus tape) 2) It increased recovery flexibility by storing many more backups online, enabling restoration from that data to recover production databases; and provisioning copies for test/dev. At its core, however, this approach remains a batch process that involves many dozens of complicated steps for backups and even more steps for recovery. Oracle’s Zero Data Loss Recovery Appliance (RA) customers report that total cost of ownership (TCO) and downtime costs (e.g. lost revenue due to database or application downtime) are significantly reduced due to the simplification and, where possible, the automation of the backup and recovery process.

For many years, organizations thought about business continuity in much the same way they thought about business insurance — yes, it was important, but rarely was it top of mind. But that’s all changed. Many organizations have, unfortunately, discovered that even a scant few minutes of service downtime can have deleterious effects on their business operations, resulting in lost revenue, diminished customer confidence and heightened compliance risk. For those and other reasons, IT executives have raised the bar on business continuity preparedness for their organizations in all ways. New technologies, business processes and partnerships, combined with a raised level of importance for testing and a full appreciation of what virtualization can and can’t do for business continuity, are essential to new thinking around avoiding the impact of an unplanned service interruption. "Ransomware is top of mind for many organizations’ leaders as their organizations face the potentially disastrous aftermath of successful attacks. ESG has surveyed IT leaders and organizations to find out how big of a problem ransomware is, what are the business consequences of downtime caused by these attacks, and which are some of the best practices and capabilities organizations need to apply to be protected. According to the ESG research, nearly two-thirds of surveyed organizations across North America and Western Europe experienced a ransomware attack at some point last year, with 22% reporting weekly attacks. The attacks have helped make cybersecurity a target of IT investment, and spending is accelerating. What’s needed to fend off this epidemic are best practices and tools to: Prevent or at least mitigate attacks Protect data and backup data Recover reliably"

Today, hybrid cloud is increasingly the norm, and enterprises are challenged with ways to have visibility, manage and make use of all this data – both on-premises and in the cloud. IT admins tasked with restoring servers or lost data during a disruption are consumed with a single-minded purpose: successful recovery. But it shouldn’t take an adverse event to underscore the importance of recovery as part of an overall backup strategy. This is especially true with large datasets. Before you consider how you’re going to back up large datasets, first consider how you may need to recover the data.

In the last few years, businesses have changed the way they protect data. Studies show they’re abandoning traditional backup and recovery in favor of disaster recovery as a service (DRaaS).1 With DRaaS, businesses enjoy the luxury of keeping a replica of their data hosted at a remote site that they can fail over to in an emergency—without bearing any of the infrastructure costs or maintenance responsibilities. All infrastructure and maintenance is the responsibility of the provider. Gartner predicts that global DRaaS revenue will reach $3.4 billion by 2019. The firm cited several reasons for the shift:
